Foundation FAQ

Foundation FAQ

We often get asked all kinds of questions about The Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation. They usually involve the amount of money raised, what it’s used for or the new tax-deductibility it provides to donors. Of course, we’re always happy to answer these questions, but, what about the questions not always asked, but, important to know, nonetheless? Here are some of the most frequently asked…

How does it work?
The sole purpose of The Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation is to support and enhance the educational programs of The National Fraternity of Phi Mu Delta. All chapters and undergraduate members benefit because all educational programming of the Fraternity is provided for by the Foundation. Tax-deductible giving opportunities are provided because of the 501(c)(3) status of the Educational Resources Foundation, of which the PMDEF is a member (see previous article). Above all, we ensure funds are invested and administered effectively for the long-term benefit of the organization.

Will I be solicited by both the Foundation and the Fraternity?
The Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation will be the sole National entity seeking your support of The National Fraternity of Phi Mu Delta. The operational needs of the Fraternity are now supported solely by undergraduate lifetime membership fees and brotherhood service fees, whereas, all educational programming, materials and educational support services are funded through the Educational Foundation’s annual fund-raising efforts.

What kinds of programs can I give to?
You can create educational incentive awards, underwrite leadership training conferences, create grants for campus programming, provide tuition assistance to interfraternal leadership academies name an endowed scholarship, purchase educational equipment or services, create or enhance study rooms or libraries in chapter properties, establish alumni or faculty awards, or fund any other types of honors or memorials that are educational in nature, for which you have an interest.

Who gives it?
Alumni mainly; as do family members of deceased alumni or those who wish to honor or memorialize another. The Foundation is also an excellent giving choice for current students and their parents.

I don’t make much and can’t give much… would a small gift really help?
Whether your gift is $10 or a major endowment gift, it makes a difference by providing meaningful educational opportunities for our undergraduate members. All gifts given, added together, help enhance the programming the Fraternity can offer, and, of course, all gifts are very much appreciated!

How can I give?
We make it simple. You can make an online donation by simply clicking the "Donate Online" button. You will have the option to make a one-time gift or make break up your gift over a period of time...the choice is yours!

Matching gifts help even more!
Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, please contact the human resources or personnel office. If your company matches a 501(c)(3) charity, please request a matching gift form from your employer, complete it and send along with your gift. We’ll do the rest! The impact of your gift may be doubled or possibly tripled through the matching gift program! Some companies will also match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

It is important to know that The Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation, as part of the Educational Resources Foundation, is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Even though your company’s matching gift program may not match fraternal organizations, please note our status as a 501(c)(3) public charity. Again, many thanks for allowing your matching gift to help even more!

My chapter is dormant, why should I give?
Some alumni might wrestle with this issue when they receive an appeal for support. While alumni from currently operating chapters make most of the annual contributions, many brothers from inactive chapters give each year and have for many years. Their motivations vary. But, each decision is personal and vital to Phi Mu Delta’s long-term growth. Some see it as a way to give back for the positive experience they’ve received from Phi Mu Delta. Others view fraternities as an important aspect of the college experience that must be preserved and enhanced. Phi Mu Delta offers college men a unique opportunity to learn how to work with others toward great accomplishments. Our businesses and communities need capable leaders. In our own way, the fraternity is influencing the world in which we live. Several other donors look forward to the day when Phi Mu Delta will return to their campus and want their chapter to rejoin a strong Fraternity. Honestly, the ups and downs of fraternity life sometimes result in difficult decisions where a chapter may no longer be represented at certain schools. However, what better reason to be a donor to the Phi Mu Delta Educational Foundation? Help ensure the educational programming, chapter consulting services, leadership training programs and officer-training institutes can be provided to ensure the strength and stability of all the chapters of our great Fraternity!
